The Progressive Technologies of America Class-III Body Armor commonly known as PT Body Armor is a body armor of American origin.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
Overview[]
The PT body armor has one large pocket on the front and one on the back for ballistic inserts of the 10x12 standard. There are large velcro slots on the chest for attachment of ID badges or insignias.
It also has a small neck protector protruding from the back. Some examples have a carrying handle attached on the back just below the neck guard. The vest can be adjusted to the figure and size of the wearer via two large velcro flaps on the front of the vest.[10]
The ballistic level of protection of the vest is determined by the class of the ballistic panels being inserted into the plate pockets.
History[]
PTOA Class-III Body Armor was produced from at least the 1980s. Due to it being one of the more comfortable vests in its class, the PT armor was very popular with the US special forces and as such it was generally employed by the Delta Force and Navy SEALs.
It was used by Delta Force in Operation Acid Gambit during the US invasion of Panama.[11]
Delta operators also utilized it later during the Somali Civil War, particularly at the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu.[12]
It appeared again later during the Iraq War, where it was again used by US special forces and private military contractors as well.[13]
