The Schlauchschal also known as Kopfschützer is a balaclava of German origin.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

Overview[]

The Schlauchschal is made of wool-rayon knit and consists of an unshaped sleeve with neck and face openings. It's measurements vary, some examples are 40-42cm in length and 24-26cm in width while others are 32x29cm. There are two color variations, Feldgrau and white.

History[]

There are known examples of the Schlauchschal stamped with "Walther & Co. Chemnitz 1942" which means that these balaclavas were produced by Walther & Co. in Chemnitz in 1942. Photographic evidence shows that the Schlauchschal was used by the German army during the Battle of Stalingrad, this and the 1942 year of production suggests that it might have been introduced with the Winteranzug 42.
